What Is Local Law 152?
New York City Local Law 152 of 2016 requires periodic inspections of all gas piping systems in most NYC buildings. The law was enacted in response to several deadly gas explosions in the city and is designed to ensure that exposed gas piping, fittings, and connections are safe and free from leaks or deterioration. Inspections must be performed by a licensed master plumber and results must be filed with the NYC Department of Buildings (DOB).

Who Must Comply
Who Is Required to Comply?
Local Law 152 applies to all buildings in New York City except one- and two-family homes (Class 1 buildings). This includes apartment buildings, co-ops, condos, mixed-use buildings, and commercial properties. Building owners and property managers are responsible for ensuring inspections are completed on time and that any defects are corrected.
Deadlines
Inspection Schedule by Community District
Inspections are required on a four-year cycle based on the community district (CD) in which the building is located. Queens community districts fall into the following schedule:
Queens CD 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
December 31 of years ending in 1 or 5 (e.g., 2025, 2029)
Queens CD 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12
December 31 of years ending in 3 or 7 (e.g., 2027, 2031)
Deadlines shift by one year if the prior cycle deadline fell in a year ending in 0 or 4. Always verify your specific deadline with the NYC DOB or contact us for guidance.

What Gets Inspected?
Exposed gas piping
All visible gas pipes from the point of entry through the building, including risers, branches, and service lines.
Fittings and connections
Unions, couplings, valves, and flexible connectors are checked for corrosion, damage, and proper installation.
Leak detection
The inspector uses approved gas detection equipment to identify any leaks along the piping system.
Pipe supports and hangers
Piping must be properly supported to prevent stress, vibration, and movement that could cause leaks over time.
Meters and regulators
Gas meters and pressure regulators are visually inspected for condition and proper installation.
Appliance connections
Flexible connectors to appliances such as stoves, dryers, and boilers are inspected for age, condition, and compliance.
